What's the difference between a fire engine and fire truck?

An engine company  performs fire suppression duties at structure, vehicle, wildland, and other types of fires, such as providing a water supply and advancing hose lines. Additional duties may include search and rescue, extrication, ventilation, and emergency medical care.

A truck company performs forcible entry, search and rescue, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, and utilities control, and provides access to upper levels of a structure. May also provide elevated streams, extrication, and emergency medical care.

A rescue company searches for and removes victims from areas of danger or entrapment and performs technical rescues.

A rescue/engine company combines the ability to perform the duties of engine and rescue companies in one apparatus while a quint (or pumper/ladder) combines the ability to perform the duties of engine and truck companies.
